Joel T. McDowell, CPA

Birmingham Office Managing Partner

Joel McDowell is a founding Partner of Tidwell Group, with overall responsibility for the Firm’s tax practice. He has over 25 years of tax and business experience, including three years of executive experience as a Chief Financial Officer and two years of private business ownership in the construction and real estate industry. He leads a qualified group of tax professionals in Birmingham, Alabama with a primary focus on various real estate areas, including real estate construction and management, commercial real estate development, single family and multi-family housing development, construction and management, including expertise in the affordable housing industry and low income housing tax credits (“LIHTC”), both at the federal and state level.

McDowell began his career in Atlanta, Georgia in the tax department of Arthur Andersen. After spending several years in the private industry, he returned to Andersen’s Atlanta office before moving to a large regional firm and eventually as a partner with Reznick Group.  Since relocating to Birmingham and working with many other real estate experts within the Firm, Tidwell Group and its partners have gained national attention as leaders in the affordable housing and real estate industry.

During his career, McDowell has gained an in-depth knowledge of partnership and corporate taxation.  Compliance expertise includes property level tax compliance, construction company tax compliance and consolidated corporate tax compliance. Tax consulting expertise includes modeling for construction and investment and tax benefit planning utilizing Cost Segregation Studies, Energy Tax Credits, and LIHTC’s. Additional experience includes multi state tax planning and compliance and individual business owner tax planning.

McDowell is involved with training and development of Firm staff and routinely participates in national and state tax and industry conferences and training meetings. He is active in AAHA, Alabama Affordable Housing Association, participating in panel discussions and assisting with state policy decisions for the affordable housing industry.  Other associations include NCSHA, National Council of State Housing Agencies, AICPA, Georgia and Alabama Societies of CPA’s.
